Open enrollment for health insurance will be here in just a few months! When you are picking out your medical policy, you may also wisely choose to purchase a dental insurance plan. What should you know while you are shopping for benefits? This blog post provides some helpful pointers.

PPO Plans Provide More Freedom

There are different categories of dental insurance. Two of the most popular types are PPO and HMO plans. With an HMO plan, you must visit an in-network dentist in order to use your benefits. With a PPO plan, you can use your insurance at virtually any dental practice in the United States (although benefits may differ slightly between in-network and out-of-network providers). Most people prefer PPO coverage due to the flexibility it provides.

There Are Standard Coverage Levels

Most dental plans cover 100% of the cost of preventive care, so you may be able to attend checkups and cleanings without paying anything out of pocket. Minor restorative services are often up to 80% covered, whereas major restorative services are usually just 50% covered.

Keep in mind that coverage can vary quite a bit between plans, so it is important to double-check the details of any policy that you are thinking about buying.

Be Picky if You Require Specialty Care

There are certain specialty services that can be beneficial for oral health but are not always covered by insurance. For example, if you want dental implants, you should be sure to find out whether a plan will cover treatment. If you need braces or Invisalign, you should also do a bit of digging to find a policy that includes orthodontic coverage.

There Are Fees and Stipulations

Dental insurance plans often have a number of fees and stipulations that can affect how much you must pay for care. For example, you may have a waiting period of 6 – 12 monthsbefore you can use your plan to cover certain restorative services. There is also likely to be a deductible that you have to pay out of pocket before your insurance will pay for anything. Additionally, it is common for PPO plans to have an annual maximum that places a limit on the amount that the insurance company will pay for approved services within a 12-month period.
